INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCESM: In the name of the one true God who writes his name on us: Our Father in heaven who adopts us as his own And of the Son who clothes us with his righteousness And of the Holy Spirit who makes us God’s family through faith. C: Amen M: How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! C: And that is what we are! M: To all who receive Jesus, to those who believe in his name C: He gives the right to become children of God. M: The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. C: We have received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” M: Teach us to realize how short our lives are. C: Then our hearts will become wise. M: Satisfy us with your faithful love every morning. C: Then we can sing with joy and be glad all of our days. (Psalm 90) Hymn 560 CONFESSION/ABSOLUTION M: We have come into the presence of our God, who created us to be like him without sin and blemish. We have not identified with his love by loving him with our whole heart, soul, and mind as he had intended. In so many ways we have preferred to follow the thinking of the world and the cravings of our self-centered heart rather than to trust and obey him. He commands us to do everything without complaining or arguing, so that we may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which we shine like stars in the universe. Yet so many times we have failed. Let us bring this to the Lord asking for his mercy. Take this quiet moment to reflect on the ways you have fallen short of honoring God in your thoughts and actions, and confess how you have failed to reflect Christ’s love in your calling to your neighbors. (Time for personal reflection and prayer) M: Together, let us confess our sins and seek God’s forgiveness (Psalm 51): C: Father, I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your child. Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” M: God has not abandoned us as his children. He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities, but sent his Son to be our brother; to live the perfect life we could not live. Because of Christ’s love he died once for all to become the atoning sacrifice for all sin. In Christ we can draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son X and of the Holy Spirit. C: Lord of heaven and earth,/ all the earth is yours and all are created by you. You desire that all people would be saved/ and come to the knowledge of the truth. Come to us in your powerful Word. Let Christ’s love dwell in our hearts. Make us shine as lights in this world/ that many others may glorify you on that day you come to visit us; through Jesus Christ our Lord,/ who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Old Testament Lesson – Isaiah 6:1-6 When God calls us to serve our neighbors, we think our sins disqualify us. God assures us that our sins are gone. So we can go out to serve Him and our neighbors. (8 am) Anthem sung by grades 5-8 from St John’s School (10:30 and 7:15) Hymn 267Gospel: Luke 5:1-11 The miraculous catch of fish shows Jesus is the Lord. Jesus calls and sends Peter, James and John to be fishers of men. Hymn 481 Sermon Text – Colossians 4:2-6 2Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
